About
donttrade is one person measuring the plan gap: the difference between how traders plan to act and how they actually act, from account-level data. There’s no name on it on purpose: every study names the script that made its headline numbers (or says when it is still to follow), and any gap is disclosed in the study, so you never have to take my word for anything. (Elsewhere on this site, “we” means this one person.)

What donttrade measures
Traders make plans for how they will handle gains and losses, and then often act differently. Heimer, Iliewa, Imas and Weber (“Dynamic Inconsistency in Risky Choice: Evidence from the Lab and Field”, NBER Working Paper 30910, 2023) report this pattern in both experiments and brokerage data: people plan to keep taking risk after gains and to stop after losses, then cut gains early and chase losses. Fischbacher, Hoffmann and Schudy (“The Causal Effect of Stop-Loss and Take-Gain Orders on the Disposition Effect”, Review of Financial Studies, 2017) found that automatic stop-loss and take-gain orders reduced the disposition effect, while reminders of the plan did not significantly reduce it.
The disposition effect is the first part of the plan gap that donttrade measures, not the whole of it. Its direction in our public study survived a holding-age control, but its size depends on how “gain” is timed and is uncertain (robustness update). The headline of a second study, on portfolio-driven selling, did not survive a stricter test and has been corrected. The plan gap, explained →

How this is paid for
Firms pay for fixed-scope measurements of their own data; readers pay nothing; no firm can change a number. Independence policy →
What you get, and how often
One study at a time, by email, when it is finished. No fixed day. Each one carries the finding, the thing that nearly fooled me, and the figures to check it with.
What this is not
Not trade ideas. Not signals. Not advice. The author is not a licensed investment professional, and nothing here is investment advice or tailored to anyone.
The credential
Excerpt of what reproduce.py prints; “…” marks lines left out here.
That is the credential: a public record of measurements anyone can re-run, including the ones that did not go my way. The scripts are on the Code page, with any gaps listed.
